Staghorn Ferns, Platycerium bifurcatum, are a long-loved tree and cliff-dwelling fern native to Southeast Asia. In tropical and subtropical climates like Florida (USDA 9a and warmer), Staghorn Ferns enjoy being permanently attached to the base of a Southern Live Oak, where they will adhere and fully grown around the branches of the tree. You may also see specimens suspended from tree branches with a rope or chain so that they can take on a symmetrical shape. When grown outdoors, they enjoy dappled light, ample humidity and good air circulation.
Our plants are mounted and have naturally attached themselves to a thick cedar plank with their shield (also known as basal fronds) and include a hook for hanging. In climates with regular winter freezes, treat your Staghorn as you would an indoor air plant: Provide them bright light and a heavy misting once a week. Avoid cold and drying drafts in the winter.
